Just to understand where the problem is, you may download from this link:

my copy of Luxi ttf fonts (it comes from Fedora 5, because more recent 
Fedora have dropped it, and have replaced it with Liberation font).

If you want, you may check if they're identical to yours. If not you may 
put them in place of yours and see if something changes.
