The same was for me. I, too, am/was used to Win32 API. I was brave enough to
begin to study GLib/GTK and found out :

1. It is quite simple in many ways (not in all ways, though).
2. The biggest advantage is - it is Open Source. If you wonder how certain
things are accomplished, and understand C code, you can look inside and see.
3. Many thinks are designed or implemented the same way as in Win32 (device
contexts, pens, brushes).
4. After a while you realize, how Win32 API is lame for its handles, messages,
etc. and understand, among other things, how the Win32 -> Win64 transition
will be difficult.

Just my opinion.
