[lazarus] Missing makefile.fpc

Greetings all...

Right at this point I am feeling a bit stupid.  I am trying to install
Lazarus and having very little success.  
I am using Linux (RH 5.1 upgraded to a 2.2.5 kernel).  
I have gotten as far as being able to install FPC (using RPM) and can get it
to compile the FPC demos.
I have unpacked the GTK headers file and tried to compile it.  This is where
I get stuck as I seem to be missing a file "makefile.fpc".  The only file
that matches this that I have been able to find is in the demo package for
FPC.

Can anyone give me a pointer as to where I have gone wrong?
