[lazarus] Static linking on Linux

Is there and easy way to setup static linking to gtk on Linux?
I have my system setup to do static or dynamic linking by having two directories for my libraries.
When I compiled Lazarus on Linux it would not let me compile it unless my gtk libs where in /usr/lib.
I had to create sym-links to my shared libs to compile Lazarus and any projects.

Lazarus is very cool.  :)
