oops forgot one thing. When installed this way, the version of fpc is 
retrieved form the existing *installed* fpc. To tell make to use the new 
  ppc use:
  * make install PREFIX=/usr/local/lib/fpc 
PP=/usr/local/src/fpc/compiler/ppc386
