Postgresql admittedly has a steep initial learning curve, but once you have
that behind you, it interfaces seamlessly with the sqldb components in
Lazarus/FPC.  I have been using Lazarus/FPC/Postgres for a commercial app
and I have not had any hiccups with it.  It does what it is told and does so
reliably.  What's more - it is a cross-platform RDBMS as well.  Runs as
sweetly on Linux et. al. as it does on Windows.
