Automated testing gives huge benefits. For my Windows development I use 
autohotkey (http://www.autohotkey.com/) to do this.
Autohotkey is not only a macrorecorder but also a scripting language
with the ability to send key-events to an application.

Some month ago I did some research, but there seems to be no
cross-platform tool available so testing would be in windows only.
