Indeed, it is terrible. ;-)

You can also use a NNTP news client (XanaNews is pretty good
[https://github.com/graemeg/xananews/releases]) and post messages via
that. Gmane supports that.

You can access the mailing list just as if it was a newsgroup through
gmane. However, the list is private, so you can freely read it, but you
may only post to it using gmane if you subscribe to the list.

To configure your newsreader to read Lazarus mail list you must:
1 - Subscribe to the mailing list using your e-mail
2 - Set the news server to: news.gmane.org
3 - Set the e-mail for use on this server to the one you used to
    subscribe on the list
4 - Look for gmane.comp.ide.lazarus.general using your news reader
