Was about to say the exact same thing. It is bad design to show/hide
components [ref: About Face 3 - The Essentials of Interaction Design] -
rather disable or ignore options when appropriate.

As it is now I can't develop under Linux or FreeBSD and apply compiler
settings that will be appropriate when I one day compile under Windows.

Granted the -WG setting, even when checked under FreeBSD/Linux, should
be ignored, and only applied when compiling under Windows.
