[lazarus] Problem cycling a new compiler

When I try to cycle a new compiler after doing a 

cvs co rtl fcl compiler gtk base 
and copying the files from base to the fpc directory, I get...
Linking pp
/usr/bin/ld:link.res: file format not recognized; treating as linker script
/usr/bin/ld:link.res:13: parse error
Warning Error during linking.
Closing Script ppas.sh
..
..

Any ideas?  I renamed my old FPC directory because I wanted to pull fresh
sttuff from CVS.

Any ideas why this didn't work?
