[lazarus] newbie question (installation)

hi all

i have downloaded the fpc and lazarus tar files.....
installed the fpc with the install.sh file

when i start lazarus the IDE opens up with no palette i.e no components
has it still not been implemented or have i gone wrong somewhere....

if yes then can someone pls gimme the exact installation steps 4 lazarus and 
fpc......(also any particular directory structure that has to be followed)

also is there any sample "hello world" code with which i can test....

pls help
