David,
You can download FPC as .tgz's as well. For a quick tutorial, check
out:

Personally, I prefer to install this way because I can get a more recent
snapshot off the FPC FTP server.
If you don't mind getting a slightly older version of FPC and you run
Debian, you can use
"apt-get install fpc"
but I think it's 1.0.6 instead of 1.0.7. Then all you need is Lazarus
which I highly recommend using CVS to get.
