[lazarus] freebsd installation

I've been trying to install the Lazarus Ide on a 
freebsd system for a few weeks now.
 
I'm new to that o/s and completely 
befuddled.
 
When I run gmake I get a series of errors with 
"usage: dirname path" following each invocation of gmake.  (If that doesn't 
make sense I'll be glad to send the actual output, not sure what's considered 
polite here :)
 
Can anyone help?
