[Lazarus] IDE Bug or Misconfiguration?

Last time I had a similar problem, it was caused by a bogus fpc.cfg in 
my home directory pointing to a wrong version of the compiler/units.
Removing it fixed the problem.
The hint that Mattias gave me was to try


touch empty.pas
ppc386 -va empty.pas

and look at the output.
