While I agree that tab characters should be preferred, instead of 
sequences of spaces, an agreement about the handling of tabs is required 
as soon as tabstops shall have a variable distance.

The use of Unicode might cure many formatting problems, when more 
characters than only spaces and tabs can be used to indicate desired 
formatting (dedicated characters for paragraphs or columns, non-breaking 
spaces, soft hyphens, joiners...).
