I wonder what an update is in this context? How does one ask svn whether 
anything "worthwhile" has gone into the fixes branch?

It would probably be possible to add a "rebuild when next terminating" 
facility. More tricky would be to make sure that everything was rebuilt- 
all widget set interfaces, cross-compilation variants and so on.
