I also had and have problems with the real time, in dual boots and in
virtual machines. One cause is DST, which can result in multiple updates
of the BIOS time. It's unclear why this problem persists, when nowadays
the system time is synced via Internet. The implementation of this
feature sucks, in both Windows and Linux systems; in one case I had to
disable the update of the hardware clock, on shutdown of openSuse. In
Windows different problems exist, possibly with the automatic DST and
UTC adjustment.
Actually the hardware clock can be set to either UTC (Linux) or to local
time, with *or* without DST adjustment (Windows). When one Windows
assumes DST adjusted time, and another one assumes unadjusted local
time, every boot or shutdown will result in a different setting of the
hardware clock :-(

Older games used to manipulate the system time, perhaps relicts from
those "good ole days" still exist in current gaming libraries?
Unfortunately it's not a good idea to run games in a VM, so that this
essentially simple solution would frustrate your youngsters, with even
worse consequences to your nerves :-(
