Well, I can offer some code that could keep both points of view
satisfied.
I have a unit, specific to Linux, that will allow a program to beep in
a suitably disgusting manner that will keep retro-gamers feeling
nostalgic for MS-DOS, but using the modern sound hardware. It does not
require root privileges either.
Anybody interested?
