[Lazarus] Lazarus on Ubuntu

I use exactly the same version of Ubuntu at work and have no problems at 
all. Initially, I installed Lazarus and FPC via Synaptic, then SVN and 
finally downloaded and installed latest trunks.
Once or twice a week I use scripts that come with Lazarus and then dpkg.

If you cannot install SVN I suspect your OS installation went titsup.
