The right toolkit makes things easier.  ;-)

Jokes aside... I actually copied and pasted a lot of support code I
wrote for the Maximus IDE (an experimental fpGUI IDE), and reused the
editor component I created for Maximus IDE too. A bit of cheating I
know, but it got the job done in a lunch break.   :-)

On a side note:
I have to agree with you though, writing a functional editor with
reasonable features is everything but a quick job. There is such a lot
in an editor we take for granted.
