There's not a general answer to your question.
It's application dependent, not system dependent.
For Lazarus IDE the answer is yes, because without the main window you 
miss the menu's to operate on the remaining forms, for Gimp (for 
example) the answer is no, because the other forms provide appropriate 
menu's.
