Honestly: you exaggerate the problem, IMHO. I'm not saying that bits 
cannot be improved here and there, but...

For every single panicked bugreport, there are 100 people who just 
installed everything in 5 mins and are using everything without 
problems. These people don't flood the mailing list with messages that 
"it's was trivial to compile and install FPC and Lazarus from sources if 
you know what you're doing", so you don't see them.

I would advise to try and install Lazarus for yourself :)
