[lazarus] Finally running

I've finally got Lazarus running, but there are still problems...

1) I can only start it if i bring up a terminal window and type ./lazarus
(this is not such a big problem)
2) I can't compile anything with it... First it complains about files
missing, and when I add the folders they are in to a search path then it
loses the filename of the unit I'm trying to compile (it complains that it
cannot compile file XXX   where XXX is a string of 2 or 3 ASCII chars)

Am I doing something wrong??? I downloaded FPC 1.0 with the sources (RPM
version) and installed it... My Lazarus source is in /opt/lazarus dir and
was checkedout 2 days ago... I'm using Red Hat 6.2 and KDE...
