[lazarus] Freepascal/Lazarus newbie

Hi,
 
I've downloaded and set up Freepascal and Lazarus 
and have a few questions which I can't find the answers to 
anywhere.
 
Lazarus seems very unstable on Win32, I know it's 
under development although I don't seem to be able to use any of its 
components without some sort of integer or bounds error happening. Is there 
something I'm missing here or is that just where Lazarus 'is' at the 
moment.
 
I can't compile, the 
Environment Settings won't save even if I type the paths in. The 
default settings in the drop list are *nix format and the path choice buttons 
don't work as they expect a file, not a folder path.
 
Freepascal seems to work okay 
though.
 
My ultimate goal is to port my exisiting 
Delphi applications to MacOs. I have read that Freepascal 
has or will have a MacOs compiler. Am I going the best way about 
this?
